Fashion Show Bans Too Skinny Models

"The world's first ban on overly thin models at a top-level fashion show in Madrid has caused outrage among modeling agencies and raised the prospect of restrictions at other catwalk pageants.

Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that young girls and women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders.

Organizers say they want to project an image of beauty and health, rather than a waif-like, or heroin chic look.

But Cathy Gould, of New York's Elite modeling agency, said the fashion industry was being used as a scapegoat for illnesses like anorexia and bulimia.

"I think its outrageous, I understand they want to set this tone of healthy beautiful women, but what about discrimination against the model and what about the freedom of the designer," said Gould, Elite's North America director, adding that the move could harm careers of naturally "gazelle-like" models.

Madrid's regional government, which sponsors the show and imposed restrictions, said it did not blame designers and models for anorexia. It said the fashion industry had a responsibility to portray healthy body images.

"Fashion is a mirror and many teenagers imitate what they see on the catwalk," said regional official Concha Guerra.

The mayor of Milan, Italy, Letizia Moratti told an Italian newspaper this week she would seek a similar ban for her city's show unless it could find a solution to "sick" looking models.

QUALITY, NOT SIZE

The Madrid show is using the body mass index or BMI -- based on weight and height -- to measure models. It has turned away 30 percent of women who took part in the previous event. Medics will be on hand at the September 18-22 show to check models.

Under the Madrid ruling, models must have a BMI rating of around 18. That would disqualify top Spanish model Esther Canadas, and supermodels like Kate Moss, based on unofficial records of their height and weight.

"The restrictions could be quite a shock to the fashion world at the beginning, but I'm sure it's important as far as health is concerned," said Leonor Perez Pita, director of Madrid's show, also known as the Pasarela Cibeles.

When asked if they supported controls, seven Spanish designers showing at Madrid either declined to comment or said they did not want to become involved in the controversy. Designers in Milan gave a similar response.

A spokeswoman for the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain, which represents those at Madrid fashion week, said the group supported restrictions and its concern was the quality of collections, not the size of models.

Eating disorder activists said many Spanish model agencies and designers oppose the ban and they had doubts whether the new rules would be followed.

"If they don't go along with it the next step is to seek legislation, just like with tobacco," said Carmen Gonzalez of Spain's Association in Defense of Attention for Anorexia and Bulimia, which has campaigned for restrictions since the 1990s.

Elite's Gould said fashion was not to blame for eating disorders that usually started at home due to poor eating habits and constant dieting by mothers.

So far, Madrid's move has yet to spark a worldwide trend toward catwalk shows with curvier figures.

London Fashion Week said in a statement it would not put restrictions on what type of models its designers use."

  • that photo has been altered by a computer. try again

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 11:21 PM

  • I personally think the modeling industry has taken it too far with the fact that being thin is the only way to be on the runway. Models don't do this to themselves. Their agents tell them what to do and what there expecting. Models do what there told or they get kicked off the runway. The modeling industry is finally opening their eyes! There killing all the beautiful, talented models! A 20+ year old SHOULD NOT be in a size 0!! It's outrageously thin! Hey im 14 years old, im in a size 0 and i weight 85 lbs. Now tell me it's normal that a women that is 24 years of age should be in the same size as me?! I agree Ban the size 0 from the catwalk! That way they'll realize they need to beef up! They'll come back but with meat on them! And they will be 100 times more famous.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:05 AM

  • they aren't banning skinny models... they are banning severely UNDERWEIGHT models. a normal BMI is 24. Models should definately be toned... and after that whatever the designer wants in between 18 and 24+ is what goes. i see no problems in enforcing a few restrictions, i am a fashion designer and i am used to working with restrictions! ALL artists face restrictions.
this is not a crazy, this is practical, its cutting down on the competition to loose weight to become a more successful model, instead its giving models the time to focus on the art of modeling... of giving the designers what they want with their reflection of the designers collections through their attitude and technique.

  • This is pathetic, get your facts right before you start shooting off your mouth! This image has been edited!!

Why don't you go and see the original!!

So what if people wana be skinny anyways you will not change the desire to be skinny!

It's each to their own leave us be!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:54 AM

  • that pic was edited i looked it up...but i do believe models are too skinny i don't see what is attractive about being that skinny

and since when did models have to be so skinny, i swear they are just meant to be tall and SLIM

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7:06 AM

  • Yeah models are suppose to be skinny but not look like starving kids in Africa. You can be skinny and still look healthy. The point of a runway model is to show off the new line of clothes. When the focus is on the model herself and her obvious lack of healthy living, it takes away from the purpose of fasion. Models get fired all the time for being too 'fat', so why shouldn't she get fired for being too skinny?

  • sad sad sad i cant believe people could believe for one second that picture is not edited.. i know the person who edited.. they explained that they overdid it to display what photoshop can do then it got leaked all over the internet.. yer so just letting EVERYONE KNOW OK!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:49 AM

  • I agree with some of the other comments. When women who are in their 20's and tall enough for runway (around or almost 6 ft. tall) weigh the same as a typical girl in junior high, something is wrong. It's wrong that the fashion industry will turn away a big girl at the first sight of her.. but accept girls who starve themselves to this point. I don't think Fashion is to blame for eatting disorders, but they are partly responsible. Besides.. don't they know they should be more intrested in bigger models? Since Beyonce and J-Lo, everyone loves a juicy booty!

  • Naturally "gazelle-like"? Who in the right mind is naturally "gazelle-like"? Nobody! It's ridiculous that cloths are made to fit a person of that size to begin with. Yorbalindachic says, "That's crazy! How can they ban skinny models?! Models are SUPPOSED to be skinny! So weird...", but I completely disagree with that statement. If him or her were to first look at the photo are the beginning of the article than he or she may understand why the show in Madrid took such measures. I mean, come on. Why would you want woman to look like that in the first place? They influence the youth and are a bad one at that. How do you think models who are in such horrific stature were led to it in the first place? They were also influenced by "gazelle-like" figures. It's ludacris, and I'm happy to hear that these models have been, for lack of a better word, quarantined.

  • HAHAHAHA
    this image is totally photo-shopped.
And poorly... who can see the lines.
    nice try, though.
and some people (REAL people) are just born skinny.
it's called having a high metabolism.
it's not like we're jerks who want to make you all feel fat...
    it;s just how we're born.
fat people are the ones with eating disorders.
stop trying to make yourself feel better by eating away at us who are just trying to get by as we are.
